Implementation Plan for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

The Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol decided (decision CP-9/7) to develop a specific Implementation Plan for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety as a follow-up to the Strategic Plan for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety for the period 2011-2020 and agreed on a process for its development, in which it assigned a key role for the Liaison Group on the Cartagena Protocol.

Main steps in the development of the Implementation plan for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety post-2020

  • Submissions by Parties, other Governments, indigenous peoples and local communities and relevant organizations that provide views on the structure and content of the the Implementation Plan for the Cartagena Protocol post-2020. See Notification 2019-027 (28 February 2019) and the submissions received.

  • Preparation of a draft of the Implementation Plan on the basis of the submissions, by the Secretariat.

  • Face-to-face meeting of the Liaison Group (thirteenth meeting), held from 22 to 25 October 2019, to review the draft of the Implementation Plan. The report of the meeting is available here.

  • Consideration of the Implementation Plan by the Subsidiary Body on Implementation and subsequently COP-MOP 10.
