Delta-cadinene synthase is an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis
of cadinane-type sesquiterpenes, such as gossypol, which provide
constitutive and inducible protection against pests and diseases.
The metabolite also causes cardio, hepato and reproductive toxicity
in monogastric animals. Delta-cadinene synthase catalyzes the
cyclization of trans,trans-farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) to (+)-delta
cadinene, which is the first committed step in gossypol synthesis.
