UgandaUganda - UGANDA FIRST NATIONAL BCH WORKSHOP 21-22 MARCH 2018
Uganda's first National BCH Training workshop under the UEP-GEF BCH-III project was conducted on 21-22 March 2018 at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel Entebbe. The workshop attracted 19 participants from different Government Ministries and Agencies responsible for Biodiversity and Biosafety, including the Environment and Natural Resources sectors as well as representatives from the Farmers Federation, National Planning Authority, Ministry of Agriculture's Crop Protection Department which is responsible for plant Quarantine services.

Also represented was the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, currently serving as the Competent National Authority and the National Agricultural Research Organization that is currently involved in GMO research and Confined Field Trials of some GM crops; as well as representation of the Academia.
Participants were trained in the Basics of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and its Biosafety Clearing House; focusing on rights and obligations of parties. They were also taken into practical sessions on Finding Information on the BCH and Entering Information on the BCH using the BCH Training Website.
It was facilitated by RA Dr David Hafashimana; while the opening and closing ceremonies were presided over by NEMA; which is coordinating the BCH-III Project for Uganda led by Mr. Franci Ogwal; assisted in the closing by an official from the CNA (Uganda National Council for Science and Technology).. The presentation on Country status of the BCH was made by Mr. Issa Katwesige from the Ministry of Water and Environment, the Focal Institution for the Cartagena Protocol and the BCH.
